Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is an outpatient procedure that improves and increases the size and shape of your breast by inserting a Saline (salt-water) or silicone gel implant. It enhances the breast size and contour, and may give your body a more harmonious balance. It can also dramatically improve breast/body proportion and balance after pregnancy.

Women considering breast augmentation do so for a variety of reasons, including:

  • Enlarging the breasts to make the body more proportional.
  • Reshaping and enlarging breasts that have lost their shape due to breastfeeding or age.
  • Balancing the appearance of breasts that differ in size or shape.

Many women experience emotional benefits from breast augmentation such as enhanced self-esteem, a more satisfying body image and a renewed sense of enthusiasm.

No two patients are alike; therefore Dr. Volk will individualize your breast augmentation options for you and your body. There is no one implant-type or type of augmentation that is best for all patients, so the best approach is to match the correct implant to each patient's breast dimensions.

During the consultation, Dr. Volk will evaluate your general health and take measurements of your breasts. He will explain which surgical techniques are most appropriate, based on the condition of your breasts and skin tone. Dr. Volk will describe alternatives and risks and limitations of each as well as review the recommended pre and post operative course with you.

You will have the opportunity with Dr. Volk to discuss the amount of breast enhancement that you would like to achieve. Along with the consultation with Dr. Volk, you will be able to choose preoperatively the size of the implant by placing various sized implants in your bra.

TYPES OF BREAST IMPLANTS

Breast implants are made in many shapes and sizes, with different inner and outer materials. The outer, pliable shell of an implant is thin, solid silicone, and its surface may be either smooth or textured. Textured surface is designed to lessen the formation of scar tissue around the implant. Smooth-surface implants have a slightly softer shell and are less likely to be felt through the skin and tissue. You should discuss the different implant surfaces with Dr. Volk to make sure you choose what is right for you.

SALINE IMPLANTS

Saline (salt water) is commonly used to fill the breast implant shell. Saline naturally comprises most of the human body, so if the implant should leak, which is infrequent (< than 5%), its fluid can be easily and safely absorbed.

SILICONE IMPLANTS

Now FDA-approved, silicone implants have a silicone rubber shell that is filled with a fixed amount of silicone gel. Silicone implants vary in shape, profile, volume, shell thickness and number of shell lumens. Most silicone gel-filled implants are not adjustable.

IMPLANT SHAPES

Different implant shapes and textures are available; however, no one implant can work best for every patient and selection needs to be individualized. Dr. Volk can help you decide during the consultation which type of implant will work best for you to achieve your optimal results.
